Phases of Time

Popular culture is a people's culture that dominates a society at a point in time. What popular culture means to me probably differs from how others may view popular culture. Popular culture holds different meanings depending on who's defining it. Popular culture is phases in time that we partake in because the majority participates in  whatever phase the society is in. For example: the "Hippie Era", the Disco Era, etc.

It is important we obtain an understanding of popular culture because of its influence and impact. It is common sense that it would be relevant to you and I in a business environment and in our present and future career. Popular culture is ever changing and with those changes so are we. In the business world and careers of so many, there are phases we endure just as society endures. The phases that come to mind are the novice phase - beginning a new career or starting a business, the intermediate phase - knowledgeable of the business world and of your chosen career and the experienced phase - becoming the "Jedi" so to speak of your chosen career and business world you are involved in. In each phase popular culture is always a consideration based on what phase you and society are involved in.

New Wave Music in the 80"s is an example of a pop culture artifact. The music was the beginning phase of punk rock and alternative music we listen to now coming to the forefront. The picture below is a band I loved in the 80"s - Culture Club. In the 80's this music was main stream.

  1. I disagree with your statement about popular culture following you in all phases of your life. Personally, Pop Culture is made for the younger masses; the buyers of our particular era. I feel this is by design, too. You may well associate with songs or pop culture, but does pop culture associate with the older generation? No, popular culture does not. Usually, the current era makes fun of the people in their "Jedi" phase. I would even argue that keeping up on popular culture will not hurt you in your career. Also, I feel as we age we move into high culture. At least that holds true about my family and friends.

    1. I have learned that it is ok to agree to disagree. I disagree with your comment. Pop culture doesn't look at an age of a person, rather it gravitates towards those who are open minded and accept what is. I still listen to this type of music and my teenagers listen to it as well. Two different generations. I pay no attention to those that talk of others or in your words make fun of because in my mind, one day those same people will be old too. :)

  2. I think that popular culture can be defined as trends of a certain era of time. It involves the latest crazes of smartphones, televisions, automobiles, and music. You could also define popular culture as the styles of clothing that you are currently wearing. David I think that if you take a moment to look at the personal items that you own, you would not have those things without them currently being popular among the masses. For instance, maybe the reason that you bought the vehicle you own or the types of shaving razors you use. These products exist on the market because a group of people have determined that is the latest trend or style. Popular culture does indeed include the older generation. Businesses need to keep track of popular culture so they can continue to develop new products that meet the needs of the masses. Failure to do so can result in an organization's downfall if they do not recognize when a product is becoming obsolete.
